A Graphic Design project from my college days.
This project had us find objects around campus that resembled alphabets. Then make one word from our alphabets and create a story.
My story was about the how the found objects banded together and wanted to be recognized as having some value and not just trash. In the video I mixed in a few shots of me trying to find one of the letters (U) and me doing a blind contour drawing of the U-shaped bracket for pipes.
Blind contour drawing: An artist, fixing their eyes on the outline of the model or object, draws the contour very slowly in a steady, continuous line without lifting the pencil or looking at the paper.
The aesthetic of blind contour drawing related to the found objects in that at first glance a blind contour drawing would look like an ugly scribble just like how at first glance these found objects would look like trash. If you examined the drawing closely the scribble can be recognized as the contours of the shape an artist has surveyed like an apple or pear. The value of those squiggly lines is that shape. If you examined the found object I was looking for you would recognize it as the alphabet “U”.
